N.B. A valid learner permit is required for all driver training courses. The learner permit normally takes 4-6 weeks to obtain.
Information to obtain a learner permit.
Step 1 – Theory Test
Applicants must pass a theory test for the Truck/Bus, the theory test can be booked online at www.theorytest.ie or by calling 1890606106.
The cost of a single category theory test is €72 or a combined theory test covering Truck & Bus is €84.
The study material for the theory test is called ‘The Official Driver Theory Test Questions & Answers for Truck and Bus. You can buy study material on the theory test website & the study material is available in the following formats: Book, CD-Rom, App for smart phones & windows pc’s.
Step 2 – Medical Report Form
You must visit a doctor and get a medical report form completed. The form can be downloaded from the NDLS website ndls.ie
The form is only valid for 30 days once completed.
Step 3 Learner Permit Application
Once you have passed your theory test & have your medical form completed you can apply for your learner permit. If you have a public services card you can apply for your Learner Permit online @ www.ndls.ie. The learner permit takes about 10 days to process and will be posted out to you. If you don’t have a public service card you need to make an appointment to attend the NDLS centre on www.NDLS.ie & apply for the learner permit in person.
The cost of the Learner Permit is €35. The permit is normally valid for two years.
Items required when applying:
Proof of address, dated within six months (Utility bill or Bank statement)
Proof of PPSN (Social security card, letter from Revenue or Payslip)
Photo ID (Full licence or Passport)
Theory Test pass cert
Medical report form
