International Womens Day 2024

‘Inspire Inclusion’

In celebration of International Women’s Day 2024, we proudly acknowledge the exemplary contributions of two female GRETB apprentices, Aishling Bilbow and Hannah Roche within GRETB Apprenticeship programmes.

Their stories highlight the growing number of women pursuing careers through GRETB apprenticeship programmes.

Aishling Bilbow, an electrical apprentice, initially trained in hairdressing before discovering her passion for electrical work. “After a brief stint in a factory, I started researching the Electrical Apprenticeship,” Aishling says. “There were some sceptics at first, but once they saw I was serious about learning and working hard, that changed.”

Hannah Roche, an arboriculture apprentice, took a different path. “When I finished school, I didn’t know what I wanted to do,” Hannah explains. “It wasn’t until I crossed paths with a tree surgeon that my interest in arboriculture was sparked.”

Both Aishling and Hannah credit GRETB with providing a supportive learning environment. “The instructors and tutors are great,” says Aishling. “They just want us to do well and get the job done.” Hannah echoes this sentiment, stating, “I have been treated as an equal and needn’t have had any concerns.”

Despite their positive experiences, both women have faced challenges. Aishling acknowledges encountering initial scepticism, while Hannah worried about the physical demands of the job. However, they persevered. “Once I demonstrated my work ethic, I was regarded no differently,” says Hannah. Aishling advises future apprentices, “Believe in yourself, be confident, and don’t be afraid to ask questions.”

Looking towards the future, both Aishling and Hannah envision long-term careers in their chosen fields. Aishling is excited about opportunities in the industry, while Hannah is passionate about Ireland’s efforts towards native woodlands. They share a common message for young women considering apprenticeships: “Go for it!” says Hannah. “Believe in yourself and your abilities.” Aishling adds, “Women must stop holding themselves back. Do your research and be well informed.”

Their advice extends beyond self-belief. “We need to start and be part of conversations about women in apprenticeships,” says Hannah. Aishling agrees, emphasising the importance of diverse promotional materials that showcase careers based on potential, not gender.

As GRETB celebrates the achievements of Aishling Bilbow, Hannah Roche, and countless other female apprentices, their stories remind us of the importance of diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity in the workforce.

With their determination and resilience, these women are not only shaping their futures but also inspiring the next generation of apprentices to pursue their passions without hesitation.
